An item about Shrewsbury that was recently on the news caught my wife's attention, and her mention of it led to me searching and finding this site.
Very interesting stuff for me, as I'm something of an amateur historian, and while I spent a fair amount of time "playing" on the Shrewsbury road in the 1970s, I never knew anything about the place until now.
I grew up in the summer months in Rawdon. The last set of pictures of Rawdon 1940 [on Laurentian Heritage WebMagazine] were so "cool."
I was born in 1944 but my family had a cottage there from the early 30s. So many memories. I now live in North Carolina but it is so nice to "go back" through your web site. Thank you so much.
I’ve uncovered a most damning indictment against our "Hero of the Long Sault". It alleges that at 22, in 1657, Adam Dollard raped a 14 year old girl in France and fled (or was banished) to the farthest reaches of the empire, to escape the consequences and stigma and perhaps also to seek atonement. Can this be dismissed as a reckless Internet chat-room smear, or do the circumstances lend it the ominous ring of possible truth?
I have just read the article re: Lac Carlin, by Mr. Railey. My grandmother, Alice Carlin, lived on the homestead at Carlin Lake. My mother, who is 88 years old,has a different account of the family history. I'm going to read this version to her and will happily share her version. True: Thomas Carlin did in fact sell the property to the Ayers family.
Other facts to follow.
Thank you for "Laurentians Hertiage." I come from that area, but don't live there now. But I do go back, I enjoy it. It would be nice if you put in a article about the railroad that went through Rockway Valley. I remember walking the tracks as a kid.
Very interesting information and thanks for running the site.
I would like to get more history on the Calumet Cemetery. The Notre-Dame Church says they have no volunteers, but that the priests keep very good records.Who would you suggest I contact to get cemetery records from the 1850s to 1900?

Editor's Note: This query was forwarded to QAHN director (and cemetery researcher) Sandra Stock. The following is her response:
In 1941, I finished last in the George Washington meet at the Côte des Neiges ski jump. I was a member of the Ski Skunks Ski Club, Harold Mines. I was 11 years old at that time. I came off the jump for first time at age 10. I competed many times after. I met the Canadian ace pilot, the hero of Malta, George Beurling, at the G.W. meet in 1943. I knew many great jumpers: Frank McKenna, Harold Bott, and many names I have forgetten. I would like to find photos of the jump.
